As the oldest historical organization in Beaufort County, South Carolina, our mission is to promote knowledge and appreciation of history with special emphasis on the Beaufort County area.
Established in 1939, the Beaufort County Historical Society has continuously worked to collect and share accurate historical information with particular emphasis on the history of Beaufort County. An all-volunteer membership organization, the Society strives to assure the proper marking and preservation of historical sites within the County. We also sponsor lectures and other activities aimed at helping to inform the public about Beaufort County’s rich historical heritage, at times partnering with other local organizations. These lectures are free and open to the public.
Our History
Founded on February 13, 1939 by nine local history buffs, the Beaufort County Historical Society originally had a limited membership of 25 persons. In later years invitations to join were extended to other members of the community.
Over the years, talks were prepared and presented by local people and noted historians about Lowcountry history, ranging from the pre-Revolutionary War era to the 21st century. The first paper given May 23, 1939 by Howard Danner was entitled, “Beaufort College: A Glimpse into its Background”.
Sixty-eight papers on aspects of Beaufort history presented to the Society can be found in the Beaufort District Collection of our County library.
Our organization sponsored and erected its first historical marker, commemorating the founding of the town of Beaufort, in 1950.
